UTA Arlington Study of Healthy Aging (ASHA) Seeks to Understand Local Impact on Aging

Arlington, TX – The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) has officially launched the groundbreaking UTA Arlington Study of Healthy Aging, a major research initiative that aims to better understand how environmental, social, behavioral, and biological factors influence the way people age in Tarrant County. The multi-year study, described as one of the most comprehensive aging studies ever conducted in the region, is already enrolling participants and is expected to shape the future of healthcare, housing, and policy in North Texas.

Still Accepting Volunteers: UTA is currently seeking study participants for this important research. Adults aged 50 and older are encouraged to join and contribute to shaping the future of aging in Tarrant County. Those interested in volunteering can learn more and sign up at the official participant page: asha-study.uta.edu/become-a-study-volunteer.

A Holistic Look at Aging in Tarrant County The study will focus on the interplay between aging and key variables such as air quality, walkability, access to healthcare, housing stability, diet, physical activity, mental health, and community engagement. Researchers are particularly interested in how these elements combine to impact brain function, cardiovascular health, muscle loss, and overall resilience in aging adults.

Using state-of-the-art tools in genomics, neuroscience, exercise science, and wearable health technology, UTA scientists are collecting data that will shed light on early markers of decline, protective factors, and interventions that could delay or prevent age-related diseases. This includes monitoring inflammation, metabolic changes, mental health fluctuations, and mobility impairments.

Community-Based Recruitment and Participant Support The research team is currently recruiting a diverse group of participants from various racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. UTA emphasizes that inclusion is critical to developing insights that are representative of Tarrant County’s population. The study welcomes adults aged 50 and older, with or without preexisting health conditions, to take part in health screenings, lifestyle assessments, and brain imaging over time.

In addition to biological data collection, the project integrates neighborhood-level research by evaluating local infrastructure, food access, pollution exposure, and transportation systems. This community-integrated approach positions UTA at the forefront of applied health research that translates directly into practical solutions.

Empowering Policy, Prevention, and Public Health Insights from the UTA Arlington Study of Healthy Aging are expected to have a profound impact on city planning, healthcare delivery, and public health investments in Arlington and beyond. The goal is to use data to guide strategies that support healthy aging, reduce disparities, and prepare systems for the rising needs of an aging population.

The study will also serve as a training ground for future scientists and public health professionals, as UTA is involving graduate students and young researchers in all phases of the project.

Advancing UTA’s Research Leadership The study builds on UTA’s Carnegie R1 status as a top-tier research institution and reflects the university’s commitment to solving real-world challenges through interdisciplinary innovation. With faculty experts in nursing, kinesiology, social work, biomedical sciences, and urban planning, the university is uniquely equipped to lead this complex, community-centered research.

Looking Ahead Initial findings from the study are expected within the first two years, with follow-up phases continuing for at least a decade. The data will be used to design interventions tailored to local populations, test new preventive care models, and influence regional policy decisions.

For residents, the UTA Arlington Study of Healthy Aging offers a rare opportunity to contribute to science while also gaining insights into their own health and wellness.
