On March 3, 2011, Nelson entered NorthPointe Baptist Church, where he suffocated Pastor Dobson with a plastic bag and severely injured church employee Judy Elliott during a robbery. He was arrested after being linked to the crime through forensic evidence and was later convicted of capital murder.
