The skyline of the Entertainment District is about to change forever. After standing as a prominent local landmark since its construction in 1984, the old Sheraton Arlington Hotel is entering its final hours. Demolition crews have successfully installed protective fencing and carefully placed dynamite around the structure in preparation for a massive implosion. The highly anticipated event is officially scheduled to take place on Saturday morning, June 6, 2026, and is expected to draw thousands of spectators to the area.
For months, specialized demolition experts have been painstakingly stripping the Sheraton’s interior, rigorously rigging the structural supports, and ensuring that the perimeter is tightly secured. The event marks the end of an era for a property that has hosted visitors near some of North Texas’ biggest attractions for decades.
According to Alex Tisch, President and CEO of Loews Hotels & Co., the implosion requires immense precision and will be remarkably swift. “A lot of dynamite will be put in the building. Then the professionals are going to explode it so that it all comes in,” Tisch explained. “One second you will look at the hotel and 45 seconds it will be gone. It’s going to be one of those once-in-a-lifetime spectator events.”
Making Way for Next-Generation Luxury
While the demolition serves as a farewell to the old Sheraton, it also marks the official beginning of a major new chapter in Arlington’s hospitality sector. The implosion paves the way for the Americana by Loews, an expansive new luxury hotel development. In fact, construction has already begun on portions of the adjacent site.
“We are already building there. There are some cranes there. They must make sure the hotel falls the right way,” Tisch noted, emphasizing the extensive coordination required by crews to protect existing new construction.
The future Americana by Loews resort promises to significantly elevate local tourism standards. Development plans detail a sprawling facility featuring more than 500 guest rooms, including 39 premium suites. Additionally, the property will offer extensive meeting and event spaces, highlighted by a 10,000-square-foot event barn explicitly designed to attract high-profile convention business.
“This puts us in a competitive set with a lot of hotels in the DFW area, but really in broader hotels in the U.S. market, we think we can take business from,” Tisch stated.
Operating under the leadership of Tisch—whose family controls Loews Corporation—the company has expanded rapidly across the nation. Once completed in approximately two and a half years, the Americana will proudly stand as Loews’ third hotel property within Arlington’s booming Entertainment District.
Local Guidance and Safety Tips
An event of this magnitude requires strict adherence to safety protocols. Public safety officials have been working closely with Loews and demolition crews to manage the large crowds expected to gather. Residents and visitors must anticipate temporary disruptions and strictly adhere to the following guidance:
- Early Road Closures: Arlington police will restrict access around the former Sheraton property starting at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday. Rolling traffic stops will also be implemented during the demolition operation. Plan alternate routes if you are commuting.
- Spectator Advice: Those hoping to watch the implosion in person are strongly encouraged to arrive early due to the massive crowds expected. Spectators must remain behind all official barricades and follow instructions from local law enforcement at all times.
- Dust and Debris Management: Those living or working nearby should keep windows closed and turn off external HVAC intakes to prevent dust from entering buildings once the structure collapses.
- Noise Advisory: The detonation will produce a highly concussive boom. Pet owners are advised to keep animals indoors, secure, and comforted during the blast.
