2020 PBR World Championship to be Held at AT&T Stadium

The 2020 Professional Bull Riding World Finals: Unleash The Beast will be held on November 12th through November 15th at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Originally planned for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the event has relocated to the American Dream City due to COVID-19 restrictions.

More than 1,200 cowboys from all over the world hold Professional Bull Riders memberships. The best of these members will meet at AT&T Stadium on November 12th for the 4-day event. World Finals’ Contestants will compete in four bull riding disciplines – breakaway roping, barrel racing and team roping (heading and heeling). The World Champion will win a $1,000,000 dollar bonus and solid gold buckle while the event winner will go home with $300,000.

The Professional Bull Riders originated in 1992 in a hotel room in Scottsdale, Arizona when 20 professional bull riders each contributed $1,000 to start the organization. The riders’ hopes were to move away from the more traditional rodeo scene and to make the rodeo’s biggest attraction, bull riding, a spectacle to be compared to any other million-dollar professional sport.

Since the first PBR World Finals in 1994, every World Finals event has been held in Las Vegas, either in MGM Grand Garden Arena, The Thomas & Mack Center, and the T-Mobile Arena. The 2020 World Finals was originally planned for T-Mobile Arena but was moved to Arlington’s AT&T Stadium due to some of Nevada’s COVID-19 restrictions.

PBR Commissioner Sean Gleason said, “If we are not allowed to conduct the PBR World Finals in our traditional home of Las Vegas, there is no better place than the largest stadium in North America.” Thankfully for PBR, AT&T Stadium is no stranger to cowboys.

However, this is not the Professional Bull Riders’ first appearance in the Texas-sized stadium. The highest attended event in PBR’s history was the 2018 Iron Cowboy event, which held 46,000 fans. Gleason shared his opinion on PBR returning to Texas by saying, “We are very grateful to Governor Abbott and the state of Texas, who moved at lightning speed to make this happen, as well as our partners in the city of Arlington, the Visitors Bureau, CBS Sports and AT&T Stadium for welcoming PBR and our loyal fans for championship week.”

This will be the first PBR World Finals in Texas but will also be the first to be held anywhere outside of Nevada in 26 years. With such a rich history of Western sports, Arlington is sure to show Texas-sized hospitality for the bull riding event and its attendees. All four days of the event will be broadcast live on CBS Sports starting November 12th.

2nd Annual Art Market Returns to Arlington

1

Each brushstroke and kiln-fired creation at Catalyst Creative Arts serves as more than just crafts. The family-owned studio in Downtown Arlington’s Urban Union is a community connector. Their 2nd Annual Art Market on November 7th will feature 8 local artists, live music from Sky Seo Jazz Trio, and more. Visitors are invited to support their local artists and small businesses at this free public event.

Photo via @CatalystCreativeArt on Facebook

On a chilly December night in 2018, Jaime Marum, Co-owner and Operator of a then Carrollton based art studio, sipped on craft beer and enjoyed live music in the Legal Draft taproom. The packed holiday event was the first time he would visit the Arlington Brewery. “It was a cool vibe what was going on in the area,” explained Jaime.

The experience inspired Jaime to join the thriving Urban Union in Downtown Arlington starting with a slew of pop-ups inside Legal Draft. Nearly a year later, Jaime made the decision to open Catalyst Creative Arts as a storefront in Downtown Arlington.

The art studio would quickly become an active player in the Arlington small business community offering classes, parties, and community events for painting, hand-built pottery, fused glass creations, and many more creative mediums for patrons to experiment with.

Constantly innovating, the team at Catalyst Creative Arts regularly finds new ways to help Arlington residents craft, create, and build. Custom-built water marbling trays for silk would make their studio one of the few in DFW to offer this unique practice.

The pandemic’s devastating impact on Arlington’s creative economy couldn’t stop Jaime and the team at Catalyst Creative Arts from creating new ways to continue to support artists and the arts. Saturday, November 7th, from 1-6 pm the studio will host The 2nd Annual Art Market giving 8 local artists space to showcase and sell their art.

Each local artist attending the market has a distinguished style and uniqueness.

Right now more than ever local artists and small businesses are depending on their communities to shop small. Independently-owned businesses in Arlington represent the scrappy, ambitious, and resilient spirit of our ever-evolving city. In the words of Jaime, supporting small businesses could “bridge the gap between feast and famine”.

Choosing to shop local is an investment in our community and its development. Shopping local is more than a trend; it is a marketplace symbol of solidarity for consumers in the midst of a pandemic.

For those who just aren’t ready to attend an in-person event yet, you can show support by following the artists on social media, giving words of encouragement to the artists, and spreading the news about the market.

For more information about The 2nd Annual Art Market visit Catalyst Creative Arts online at https://www.catalystcreativearts.com/.

MLB Fans In Arlington Attend First Game In Person Since March

Yesterday for the first time since Major League Baseball shut down spring training due to coronavirus pandemic, fans gathered to watch the kick-off NLCS game between the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Approximately 11,500 tickets have been announced available for the National League Championship Series (NLCS) and World Series held at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Teams tied 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning when Austin Riley hit a 448-foot home run to give Atlanta the lead. The Braves would go on to win 5-1.

For the players, the return of the fans was “much needed,” according to Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman.

Distanced across the stadium fans cheered for both teams replacing the recorded fan noises that have played during the MLB regular season.

Stadiums remained empty during the MLB regular season and only a limited number of fans have been permitted at certain NFL games. At last night’s game at Globe Life Field, roughly 28% of capacity was filled with fans in the stands. The AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys, has limited capacity to 25%.

From seating to restrooms fans were expected to socially distance. And, of course, a mask was required for entry.

“Every operational update at Globe Life Field was done with safety as the absolute top priority as we continue to navigate the pandemic,” said Casey Rapp, general manager for Delaware North at the ballpark, via press release. “Along with the Rangers, we are honored to welcome fans during the NLCS and Fall Classic at this spectacular new ballpark.”

Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Celebrates the Completion of Abram Street Rebuild Project

A ribbon-cutting ceremony held today at the intersection of Abram and Mary marks the official end of the $50 million Abram Street Rebuild project. The project began at the Grand Prairie city limits just east of State Highway 360 more than six years ago and has progressed westward to Cooper Street and the surrounding Downtown Arlington area. Public Works and Transportation Director Keith Brooks, Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams, City Council District Representative Ignacio Nunez and Downtown Arlington Management Corporation President and CEO Maggie Campbell were present at the celebration and spoke briefly about the huge significance the improved thoroughfare has for the City of Arlington.

Keith Brooks, Public Works and Transportation Director, shared his thoughts on Abram’s completion saying he was, “Proud that we were able to create a more pedestrian-friendly downtown thoroughfare, with beautiful aesthitics, roadway improvements, on-street parking and enhanced pedestrian lighting features.” Mayor Jeff Williams spoke about his enthusiasm for Downtown Arlington’s future saying,”We are going to experience many great days in Arlington. It is a game changer.” City Council District Representative Ignacio Nunez spoke of his personal vision for the Downtown Arlington area saying, “This area will be our town square. It is the beating heart of Arlington. It is vibrant, culturally strong, and economically sound.” Finally, Downtown Arlington Management Corporation President and CEO Maggie Campbell reflected on the past several years of work summarized by saying, “This shared vision for a walkable, vibrant downtown neighborhood is slowly being realized. Slowly but surely.”

The difficulties and long years of hard work on Abram St have been well documented. Citizens of Arlington can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing that traffic due to construction is now over and local businesses can relax knowing the new road will allow easier access to their establishments. Hopefully this long, but necessary, step of Downtown Arlington’s continuing growth will prove to be worth the wait as we slowly await the end of the COVID-19 pandemic and resume city life as we once knew it.

Local Arlington Business Busy Bee Workshops Receives COVID-19 Relief Grant from The Spanx by Sara Blakely Foundation

Busy Bee Workshops is a small studio that hosts instructor-led classes where guests can work on fun do-it-yourself projects like string art, paintings, and home décor. Before the pandemic began, the studio hosted weekly classes where anyone was welcome to join in the fun. In an effort to keep visitors safe, Busy Bee has adapted by creating their own take-home projects available for curbside pickup. Each Busy Bee Box is unique and contains everything you need to start a fun DIY project. “By far, the most heartwarming part of our job is seeing families connect in the studio and our favorite thing is when guests don’t think they’ve got a creative bone in their body, but they end up leaving with a smile and sense of accomplishment after finishing a project,” owner ValleCaldwell says.

The business was honored with a $5000 grant from The Spanx by Sara Blakely Foundation. The foundation was created by the CEO of Spanx, the popular clothing company, that serves to alleviate some of the financial pressure of the COVID-19 pandemic. By partnering with GlobalGiving, a nonprofit organization that helps companies and individuals create their own charitable projects, The Spanx by Sara Blakely Foundation has been able to provide $5000 grants to 1,000 female-owned businesses across the country.

The Spanx by Sara Blakely Foundation has named this grant the “Red Backpack Fund”. The name of the fund is a reference to a red backpack that Sara Blakely’s mother used while she was in college. After starting Spanx, Blakely felt as though the backpack was a symbol of luck for her. Even as her company began to grow she refused to buy a purse or handbag, insisting that her lucky red backpack was the key to her success. Each recipient of the Foundation’s $5000 grant also receives a red backpack as a reminder of this story. Now, looking back, Blakely sees her red backpack as a symbol of women’s potential and inner strength. The Foundation has donated millions to charities around the world since 2006, and in 2013, Blakely signed the Melinda and Bill Gates’ and Warren Buffett’s Giving Pledge, a promise to give half of her wealth to charity.

Thousands of business owners and nonprofit founders from across the United States and its
territories applied to receive a grant from The Red Backpack Fund to combat economic
hardship caused by COVID-19. Busy Bee Workshops was selected for the grant based on its
outstanding application, its urgent need for COVID-19 relief, and its demonstrated capacity to overcome COVID-19 setbacks.

One of the primary goals for GlobalGiving and Spanx, both women-owned companies, is to help other women-owned companies succeed as they have. In the difficult times of a global pandemic, this goal is as important to reach as ever. As GlobalGiving CEO Alix Guerrier states, “We’re proud to announce the grantees of The Red Backpack Fund. They have successfully undergone GlobalGiving’s rigorous vetting process, and we believe this grant will help them continue to thrive, despite the shifting economic circumstances brought on by this crisis. The world needs more women-led organizations who are a key force in overcoming COVID-19 and establishing a better normal.”

Supporting local businesses is more important now than ever before. Grants like this will be essential to keep these key community players going. In owner Valle Caldwell’s recent video to Spanx, she says, “We want to be able stay part of this community – we love our guests, we love the people who come here to create things. We are a huge part of the community – we donate to its fundraisers, employ its students, support its non-profits. It’s something we feel strongly about and we thank you for everything you are doing.”

Arlington ISD’s Return to School 2020 Plan: What You Need to Know

0

As the year goes on, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to challenge society by forcing it to adapt in order to avoid high infection rates. Nearly every institution on the planet has been affected in one way or another and rarely has it been an easy fix. One of the most affected institutions in our society seems to be our education system. Schools all over the country have begun to make changes to their curriculum and teaching methods in order to adapt to the virus. Here in Arlington, the AISD is now in the beginning stages of its Return to School 2020 plan. The AISD’s “Return to School” plan uses six guiding principles. Health and Safety, Rigorous Learning, Educational Equity, Stakeholder Services, Flexibility and Grace, and Clear and Concise Communication.

Health and Safety

All students will be required to wear masks for whom it is “developmentally appropriate”. Social distancing will be used wherever possible. Everyone who enters the building will be required to wash/sanitize their hands. Students will be required to use hand sanitizer as they move from to room and each room will have its own set of sanitizing supplies. Each desk will also be sanitized between students.

A health-screening questionnaire will be used throughout the semester in order to identify possible COVID-19 infections. Students will be required to take the questionnaire once a week, while staff and visitors will do so on a daily basis. In addition, temperature checks will be required for all students, staff, and visitors as they enter the building.

Rigorous Learning

The sudden impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has not allowed a convenient reason to adapt school curriculum into a virtual setting. However, AISD ensures that quality of education will remain high whether teaching is done physically or virtually. Resources normally available to students in previous years will be made available this year as well, wherever possible. Teaching online will be treated just as seriously as teaching in a classroom.

Educational Equity

AISD has done its best to make sure students are well equipped for this new learning environment. Throughout the summer, local Arlington schools have been able to provide laptops for students to use for their online classes. The district will continue to accommodate students to the best of their ability.

Stakeholder Services

Many of the changes being implemented this semester have been due to concern from parents, staff, and other community members. By receiving and using feedback from everyone as the semester continues, AISD hopes that the concerns of all parties are being considered and will factor into future adjustments.

Flexibility and Grace

Although a great amount of effort has been put into transitioning an in-person curriculum into a series of online modules, the AISD recognizes that this is not the ideal learning situation for most students. AISD currently plans to open school doors after September 27th 2020, at which point students will be allowed to return to physical classes. However, due to rapidly changing information about COVID-19, this date is subject to change. AISD hopes that parents of students understand the unique and challenging situation that COVID-19 presents to schools and asks for patience as they continue to adapt.

Clear and Concise Communication

With constantly updating information, it is difficult for parents and staff to keep track of the new changes. The district maintains that communication is one of the most important functions of the AISD, now more than ever. New information, protocol changes, important dates and more will be posted on social media as well on the official AISD Return to School 2020 site. It is vitally important that parents understand the new changes that are taking place as well as any future changes that may come. AISD is doing everything possible to make sure that information is easily available.

More info on AISD Return to School 2020 can be found at: https://www.aisd.net/return-to-school-2020/

Levitt Pavilion Arlington’s New Hospitality Center Provides Bathrooms, A Private Suite, And Outdoor Deck

0

Construction on the Levitt Pavilion Arlington Hospitality Center is over halfway complete after initially breaking ground back in August 2019.

The new Hospitality Center will be named after one of its biggest donors, the Baylor Scott & White Orthopedic & Spine Hospital, who donated $750,000 to the project. Another large donor is the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation who gave $500,000 to the initial fund. Alongside these donors, the Levitt Pavilion also received donations from local Arlington residents.

Originally, the building of the Hospitality Center was planned to be in sync with the Abrams Reconstruction Project and were meant to be finished at around the same time. The completed Hospitality Center, in combination with the new and improved Abrams and the newly opened businesses along the street were hoping to be the start of a new era for the Downtown Arlington Cultural District. However, due to some delays and the unprecedented effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hospitality Center’s final date of completion is yet to be determined.

One of the most significant reasons for the building of the Hospitality Center is to provide bathrooms at the event space. Since the beginnings of the Levitt Pavilion, a common complaint from guests has been that permanent restrooms are not available. Portable toilets have been available for event attendees in the past but were only meant to be used temporarily. The Hospitality Center will be the location for the Levitt’s permanent bathrooms, which will include family bathrooms and accessible stalls.

In addition to the permanent bathrooms, the Hospitality Center will include a private suite capable of fitting up to 100 guests. The private suite will be named after one of the Center’s donors, the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation. The suite will be available for private events, meetings, and parties. In addition to its own bathrooms and kitchen, the suite will also provide access to a large outdoor deck that provides an ideal view of the Levitt Pavilion stage.

Hospitality Center Viewing Deck

The concerts at the Levitt have included everything from local bands to Grammy-award artists such as Kenny Loggins, Pentatonix, and Snarky Puppy. Since 2008, the Levitt Pavilion has hosted a free concert series every year. The 2019 concert series featured artists like The Polyphonic Spree and Reverend Horton Heat. In addition to the free series, Levitt Pavilion also hosts a yearly benefit concert. Previous benefit concert featured acts have included .38 Special, Barenaked Ladies, and Starship. Along with concerts, the Levitt also hosts a yearly free summer movie series, which began in 2016, which focuses on family-friendly movies.

The Levitt began its first ever Living Room Series, which livestreams musical performances every Tuesday until August 28th, bringing the concert experience to your home. The Living Room Series provides a way to enjoy live music while remaining safe.

The Levitt hopes that the Hospitality Center will make guests feel welcomed and comfortable when they attend events. Once public gatherings become safe again, the Levitt Pavilion will resume being a site of exciting events and festivals. With these new additions and growing list of events planned for the future, the Levitt Pavilion is sure to earn its place as Downtown Arlington’s cultural centerpiece.
